You’ve just had a shiny new website built and you’re excited to start attracting new visitors, however it’s not showing up on Google. There are many reasons for this with the main being that you don’t have any SEO for your website, which is search engine optimisation. However it’s important to first make sure there are no issues causing your website to not appear.
You can test if your website has been indexed by Google by searching for its exact URL with no other words on the Google Search (e.g. https://www.yourwebsite.com). If it’s showing then there isn’t any issue with your website, it just been optimising for Google so that it can be found. However, if your website has only just gone live we would recommend waiting a week before testing this again as it can take this amount of time to initially be indexed. If your website isn’t showing after you’ve completed your test then there are a number of reasons why this is happening such as ‘no-index’ tags on your website or you have your settings set to block Google from crawling your website.
If there is no issue then optimising your website through SEO practices will help to start ranking for your relevant keywords. Search engine optimisation is the practice of optimising content and other areas of a website so that it can be discovered through a search engine (e.g. Google, Bing). Google has over 200 ranking factors which can be categorised into two areas: on-page and technical SEO. On-page SEO consists of title tags, meta descriptions and the content on the website including blog posts. Whereas technical SEO focuses on factors such as page speed, external and internal linking strategies, backlinks and error logs. There are guides online which can help you with basic SEO, however depending on your industry you might need professional help with your SEO.
